Rest in Peace Treat Williams

When I heard the news of Treat's passing this morning, and a picture of him flashed across my twitter feed, I struggled for a moment to remember where I recognized him from. When I realized he played Robert Lowell in Reaching for the Moon, it stopped me in my tracks. Of course. Of course, that's how I recognize him; it's only one of my favorite movies ever created!

Rest in Peace, Treat. You will be missed.

I recently watched the film Flores Raras (Reaching for the moon). This is the story of the life and love of Elizabeth Bishop and Lota de Macedo Soares. Beatiful and moving story. Miranda Otto and Gloria Pires did an excellent job.

Sometimes I am fascinated by the power of the frame or scene.

And this frame caught my eye. On the one hand, the beginning of a new life. A car can symbolize movement, path, uncertainty, beginning.

On the other, obligations. A newly finished house and a partner that is locked in a glass box.

One frame and so much information. For me, this is a kind of magic.

Rewatching Flores Raras/Reaching for the Moon for the first time in quite a few years and really struck by the aesthetic and the storytelling captured in this scene. I especially love the spacious, lonely Edward Hopper-esque feeling of Mary sitting alone on the couch...

I’d also forgotten how tragic and also sexy the film is!
